Lost production potential is common in horizontal gassy wells as the gas that invariably enters the pump intake detrimentally affects the pump volumetric output. On a gassy well, optimal production is a function of bottom hole pressure, gas separator efficiency, and fluid properties, including gas/oil ratio. Where a high target pump fill setpoint could result in lost production potential because of excess gas fill volume, a low target setpoint could lead to pointless overspeeding of the pump.
An automatic target pump fill at the gassy wells is ideal to maximize production rate and pumping efficiency in the presence of gas. Unico’s rod pump optimization scheme automatically selects the target pump fill based on an average estimated fluid level over the pump and past pump liquid and gas fill estimates. In this control scheme, pumping speed is optimized to exploit increased production potential in the presence of a gas constraint while favoring increased pumping efficiency and equipment life in the absence of a gas constraint.
